I have not lived too much
I have not lived too long
I have not lived to much
To change the way I’m going
Every careless, selfish word
Every careless, selfish thought
Cannot be rescinded or reversed
As no lesson can be untaught.
I have lost too many friendships
But countless more remain
In the sea of friendly faces
To which I turned a stranger’s gaze today
I have put a hundred thousand lines to paper
Whose incantations I did not mean
— I can delete or use an eraser
though their foolish shame may long remain
